I picked this radio up based mostly on price. There is a lower scale Midland available, but for a few more dollars this seemed to have everything I wanted. I’m a ham radio operator, and do communications for a federal maritime SAR agency, so knew what I wanted in a radio.
I ran several radio checks with the radio on channel 9 at my marina but was unable to raise anyone (typical for this area). However, with another of my radios located close by I was able to hear the output audio which was crisp, clear and clean. Received audo is very good, loud and clear.
It has the NOAA weather frequencies available, which is a great asset. Battery life is at least 6 hours on receive.
The display is VERY large and easily readable. The only downside is accessing the features. There’s a ‘menu’ button which does different things depending on how many times you push it. Changing channels requires pushing the button once, then hitting the channel button. Holding the menu button for 3 seconds takes you to the weather channels, etc. I suppose they did this for cost, but it’s a bit confusing to try and remember how many times you’ve hit the button, or how to access other features.
But, it’s a solid performer at this price. I like the audio, the ease of reading a big screen, and it’s light; not too heavy hanging on a belt. It comes with the earphone jack, mike, AC and DC power cables and bracket to set the radio in.
