2-Way Radio Item ID: #509TriSquare TSX300-2VP eXRS Digital 2-Way Radio (Pair), Charcoal Metallic/BlackItem DescriptionTriSquare has revolutionized 2-way radio communication with eXtreme Radio ServiceTM (eXRSTM). eXtreme Radio Service (eXRS) two-way radios use proprietary Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) in the ISM band (900 MHz frequencies). This FHSS system combines the power of digital technology with narrow band FM modulation technique. Merging the two technologies facilitates a radio communications system that maintains a narrow band base signal to ensure for maximum usable range within a given dB power budget, comparable to traditional fixed frequency narrow band FM radios, but with the added benefit of wide band digital security and privacy provided by the frequency hopping spread spectrum algorithm. Maintaining the information signal as narrow band FM modulation centered on discrete frequencies allows for a large pool of non-overlapping hopping frequencies to draw upon within a given section of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The pseudo-random drawing of the hopping frequencies spreads the total signal power equally over the entire bandwidth of the RF spectrum used, which ensures minimal interference between many simultaneous, independent users. Interference Free is a major advantage that eXRS has over existing FRS and GMRS radios. Based on a contracted study from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of a major university, more than 100,000 eXRS users within talk range can enjoy uninterrupted communications. Whereas, FRS/GMRS quickly becomes unusable with just a few tens of users within range of each other. Bottom-line is that the eXRS two-way radios provide private communications in areas where FRS/GMRS conversations can be congested or impossible. Depending on which model you choose, your eXRS radio will have 1,000, 10,000, or all 10 Billion eXRS channels available for your use. Each radio offers Voice-operated transmission (VOX) for hands-free operation with headset compatibility. Nice technology but I had a lot of problems with dropouts and synchronization problems between units. Audio quality is quite poor also.
Product worked without any problems with 4 units running on the same channel. Sound is great. Only downside to these units is when you switch to a privite channel the units do not switch back to the main channel unless you turn the units off and back on.
This review is based on one day’s experience. I bought two sets and everything works as advertised. These radios have more power than FRS radios, so they deplete their battery pack faster. Voice quality is about the same as a spread-spectrum cordless phone – clear with some background static. These should not be compared with FRS/GMRS, however, since they are essentially interference-free even in crowded environments (such as amusement parks.) See the thread on [...].
I just tested a pair of these radios in the mountains. It has 30% shorter range then regular Midland 26 miles GPRS radio. Sound quality is very poor. Save your money and buy generic 20-26 miles FRS/GPRS.
Wow, purchased 4 of these radios (TSX300-2VP) from Academy Sports while on vacation. As luck would have it, when I got home I encountered a problem with two of the radios. Driving 300+ miles to return the radios was not what I wanted to do. I wrote TriSquare an e-mail describing the problem. Within 10 minutes I received a telephone call from a representative with TriSquare, that is correct, a real person followed up almost immediately with me! The representative’s focus was not one like I have experienced in the past, most of the support staff that I have spoken to in the past are spending a lot of time trying to place blame on end-user error, i.e., “you must have broken the radio as there is no way that the radio shipped with the problem that you described”. Anyway, long story shortened, TriSquare has sent me equipment to replace my DOA equipment. In today’s times, that is Outstanding Customer Support and I definitely will do business with TriSquare again in the future should I have a similar need.
